Cancer became personal for me as a teenager when my aunt Carolyn was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was the first time I experienced the pain of losing someone to this disease. Watching her endure chemo, hair loss, and becoming so fragile shook my world before she passed in 2009. Later, I met Mari Rogers while working at Zaxby’s. Despite our age difference—I was 18, and Mari was 52—we became best friends. She had undergone a mastectomy and shared stories of her life in Japan, Paris, and the U.S. My favorite memory is us dancing and singing in the Zaxby’s kitchen. Mari passed in 2013, but I was told that just before she took her last breath, she looked up, smiled, and went peacefully. One day, we’ll sing together again in praise to Jesus.

I’m raising money because I want to directly impact our local community of cancer patients, just like Carolyn and Mari. Our fundraising stays local, ensuring that the efforts and donations we make are used to extend lives right here in our community. I can see firsthand the difference it’s making. It’s not about sending money off to a faceless company; it’s about knowing that our work helps people we can see and visit. To me, it’s a beautiful picture of Jesus' love in action.
